Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty which involves the diagnosis and surgical treatment of the disorders related to the brain, spine, and other parts of your nervous system. It includes the surgical treatment of several conditions such as brain and spinal tumors, epilepsy, brain or spinal cord injuries, spine and disc degeneration, skull base disorders, movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, etc.

A neurologist is a doctor who holds expertise in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of nervous systems like the brain or spinal cord, and nerve disorders and doesn't perform any kind of surgery.

Neurosurgeons are specially trained medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of various conditions related to the brain, spine, and other parts of your nervous system.

Some of the common brain conditions are blood clots, brain tumours, aneurysms, haemorrhages, nerve damage, arteriovenous malformations, etc and common spine conditions are herniated discs, spondylosis and spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, spinal osteoarthritis, etc.

Some of the common types of brain surgeries are minimally invasive endonasal endoscopic surgery, cerebral aneurysm repair, deep brain stimulation (DBS), craniotomy and craniectomy.

Some of the common types of spine surgeries are endoscopic spine surgery, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, spinal laminectomy, spinal fusion, nucleoplasty, foraminotomy, discectomy, minimally invasive spine surgery, disc replacement surgery, etc.

If you have symptoms like loss of consciousness, atypical numbness and pain, forgetfulness, facial asymmetries and unusual headaches, vertigo,  traumatic injuries to your spine or head, spasms, and twitching you must see your primary physician.

Your primary care doctor would recommend you consult a neurosurgeon if the initial examination reveals neurological deformities such as brain tumours, chronic diseases, neck and spine injuries, etc. based on your symptoms.

A neurologist will perform a complete medical and family history checkup, followed by a few lab and diagnostic tests. It may include CT scan, Electroencephalogram (EEG), MRI, Electromyography (EMG), Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Arteriogram, Spinal Tap, Evoked Potentials, etc. The neurologist may refer the case to a neurosurgeon if any surgical intervention is needed.

Normally brain and spine conditions lead to chronic or acute pain that may affect the physical and mental health of the patient if left untreated. If the condition worsens, a neurosurgeon will ask you to go through neurosurgery based on your diagnosis. If neurosurgical treatment is too expensive, has a longer wait period or advanced facilities are not available in your home country, then you may consider travelling abroad to leading healthcare destinations like India. But before travelling abroad for neurosurgery treatment, you need to gather all the basic required information such as treatment cost, destination, hospital, and doctor and know all available options to make the right decision.
