General Surgery

General surgery is a specialty that entails carrying out surgical procedures on various body parts, including the abdomen, head and neck, chest, blood vessels, and limbs, to treat a variety of medical conditions

Some common conditions that may require surgery are cancer, gastrointestinal disease, chronic pancreatitis, gallbladder inflammation and gallstones, thyroid disorders, colectomy, Barrett's esophagus, etc.

Having any of the above conditions doesn't necessarily mean you need surgery. However, if your doctor detects, diagnoses, and confirms the need for surgery, he/she may refer you to a general surgeon.

Not all surgeries require specialized surgeons, such as cardiac (heart) or neurosurgeons (brain) surgeons. That's why there are general surgeons. A general surgeon is skilled in all aspects of surgery, from preoperative planning to postoperative care.

A general surgeon is knowledgeable in all nine of the fundamental surgical specialities, which are: the digestive system, the abdomen and its contents, the breasts and other soft tissue, including the skin, the neck, and head, the heart, and blood vessels, the endocrine system (glands and hormones), cancer surgery, surgical treatment for traumatic injuries, the treatment of critically ill patients who require surgery.

A general surgeon will conduct the following tests if he suspects the need for surgery,

  • Blood test - Blood chemistry, Coagulation studies, procalcitonin, complete blood count, liver enzyme test, and arterial blood gas.
  • Imaging tests - CT, MRI, X-ray, Ultrasound, endoscopy, and PET scan.

Several different surgical procedures can be used, depending on the type of surgery, including; open surgery, minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopy, endoscopy, arthroscopy, bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, cystoscopy, gastroscopy, hysteroscopy, laryngoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, etc.

Some common types of surgeries are gallbladder removal, appendectomy, esophageal surgery, exploratory hernia surgery, vascular surgery, splenectomy, endocrine surgery, colon surgery, breast surgery, thyroid surgery, etc.

If you are diagnosed with any condition requiring surgery, you must get effective treatment as early as possible.
